چکیده

The Next Linear Collider (NLC) requires a substantial system of beam collimators to minimize the halo-related backgrounds at the interaction point, provide machine protection against errant pulses, and limit radiation doses throughout the accelerator. In particular, the NLC design contains a complete 5-dimensional (x,x’,y,y’,energy) collimation system at the entrance and exit of the main linac; transverse collimators at the electron and positron sources, at the 250 MeV point in the injector linac, and immediately upstream of the damping rings; a series of collimators at points with substantial z-energy correlation for longitudinal collimation; and a final set of transverse and energy collimators in the final focus, a few hundred meters from the IP. We describe the systems above and estimate the intensity of the halo at each point, as well as the efficiency with which the halo is removed by the collimators.

Studies of Beam Optics and Scattering in the next Linear Collider Post-linac Collimation System

We present a new conceptual and optical design for the Next Linear Collider post-linac collimation system. Energy collimation and passive protection against off-energy beams are achieved in a system with large horizontal dispersion and vertical betatron functions. Betatron collimation is performed in a relatively low-beta (FODO-like) lattice in which only thin spoilers intercept particles near ...

New Post-Linac Collimation System for the Next Linear Collider

We present a new design for the NLC post-linac collimation system. The new design separates the collimation of off-energy particles and particles with large betatron amplitudes. The energy collimation system achieves passive protection against damage by an errant bunch train via large horizontal dispersion and vertical betatron functions, and makes use of optical symmetries to reduce jitter amp...

Collimation Systems in the next Linear Collider

Experience indicates that beam collimation will be an essential element of the next generation e+elinear colliders. A proposal for using nonlinear lenses to drive beam tails to large amplitudes was presented in a previous paper [l]. Here we study the optimization of such systems including effects of wakefields and optical aberrations. Protection and design of the scrapers in these systems are d...

Comparison of the Tesla, Nlc and Clic Beam-collimation System Performance∗

This report describes studies performed in the framework of the Collimation Task Force organized to support the work of the second International Linear Collider Technical Review Committee. The post-linac beam-collimation systems in the TESLA, JLC/NLC and CLIC linear-collider designs are compared using the same computer code under the same assumptions. Their performance is quantified in terms of...

Conventional Collimation and Linac Protection

We describe linac protection and a conventional collimation system appqxiate for a next linear collider. The linac accelerating structure can be protected from “worst credible failures” by a system of sacrificial spoilers. For the collimation system we consider the effects of asverse wakefields and the transmission, heating, mechanical stress, and edge-scattering properties of scrapers. We requ...
